From her very first note to the Opera House stage
When eight-year-old Isabel joined her first International Girls Choir (IGC) class last year, she’d never sung with a choir before. Now, she’s rehearsing with her fellow IGC sisters for the opportunity of a lifetime; performing at the world-famous Sydney Opera House.
Discover the exciting opportunities that await for your daughter at the International Girls Choir by registering for Open House! Registration is free but bookings are essential.
For many girls and parents, joining a choir isn’t just about singing. It’s about finding your voice, building confidence, making friends, and discovering a stronger sense of self. As we celebrate one year of providing exceptional music and performing arts education in Singapore (as well as more than 40 years of history in Australia), we’ve seen firsthand the powerful impact we can have on young Singaporeans… and it’s just the beginning.
Why the performing arts matters – especially now
The world our children are growing up in is fast-paced, high-pressure and increasingly digital. In this environment, the performing arts offer a rare and valuable space, one where expression, collaboration, and emotional intelligence are front and centre. The IGC provides more than just musical training; it builds confidence, nurtures resilience, and helps girls connect both with each other and with themselves.
At the IGC, we put these skills into action through carefully designed lessons that balance vocal technique and music skills with teamwork, leadership and communication. Girls learn to listen actively, step outside of their comfort zone, perform in front of an audience, and work together towards a shared goal, which naturally builds public speaking ability and self-assurance. These are the same qualities that help young people thrive in school, and later, in their careers.
“You passed her the mic of life and I have more confidence than ever that it will set her on the right path. Young women face so many more challenges than ever before – becoming comfortable in one’s own body and with one’s true voice is the remedy to it all.” – IGC Parent
A place for every voice to excel
The founding philosophy of the IGC is that every child can learn to sing given the correct training and encouragement. Our program is designed to welcome girls of all abilities and provide them with an opportunity to explore their creativity, experiment with their vocal abilities, and grow into self-assured young women as they discover their unique voices. We foster an environment where every chorister feels empowered to use her voice, whether on stage, in the classroom or beyond, with the confidence to carry this skill into future professional settings. As they grow in singing, dance and drama, choristers also develop leadership skills; older members act as role models by guiding and supporting younger girls.
During their time in the choir, from rehearsal all the way through to performances, girls learn the value of collaboration and teamwork. As they work towards common goals like our November and May concerts, each chorister is recognised not just for individual achievements but also for their contributions to the ensemble’s success. The IGC is not just about singing; it’s about building a community and finding belonging, where girls feel valued and inspired to reach their full potential, on and off the stage.
Opportunities for extension
For those who are ready to take their skills to the next level, our audition-based Performing Choir provides advanced training and exciting opportunities to perform at exclusive events around Singapore. The curriculum in Performing Choir includes part singing, more complex choreography, drama and theatrical interpretation, music literacy, presentation and performance skills. Girls will enjoy learning a challenging and diverse repertoire in an environment that celebrates and fosters individual talent, whilst placing emphasis on teamwork and effort.
“I’m writing to let you know you have done the most fabulous job of torch lighting excitement for performing in Izzy, she is simple a brighter version of herself since joining the group.” – IGC Parent
This year, a group of our young choristers from Singapore have the incredible opportunity to travel to Australia for a Sydney Tour, culminating in a performance at the world-renowned Sydney Opera House alongside our Australian Girls Choir sisters. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity that we’re so proud to offer and just one example of how far music can take you.
Celebrating One Year in Singapore
Over the past year, we’ve had the privilege of welcoming more than 200 girls from Singapore into our choir family. Parents have told us their daughters are more confident, focussed and excelling at school:
“Since joining the choir, my daughter, Emily, has become more confident and proactive in speaking in front of others. I believe this experience has had a positive impact on her overall school life. In fact, she was recently selected for a significant role within the school – an opportunity offered to only a small group of Primary 2 students. This achievement, I feel, is in part due to the valuable experiences she has gained through the IGC program.” – IGC Parent
Girls who started out shy are now stepping up to solos and role modelling behaviours to younger members. And the best part? We’re just getting started.
Whether your daughter is already passionate about singing or simply curious to try something new, the IGC is a place where she can shine. No experience is needed, just a love of music and a willingness to give it a go. We invite you to join us for a free class at our August Open House and experience the wonderful world of opportunities that await at the IGC.
