Myth 1. Only girls with prior singing experience can join
You might think that only girls who have prior singing experience can join, but that’s far from the truth! The International Girls Choir is open to girls of all experience levels, from beginners to advanced singers. Our program is structured to nurture musical talent, regardless of your daughter’s starting point. Whether your child has never sung before or already has some experience, we provide the necessary guidance and support to help her grow as a performer.
Our experienced tutors are dedicated to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment, ensuring that every girl progresses at her own pace and builds a true love of music.
“Our entire family loves music, and we appreciate IGC’s musical education, delivered with professionalism, and within an environment that is supportive and positive. The lessons are interesting and bring joy to my daughter’s week.” – IGC Parent
Myth 2. My daughter is too shy to join the choir
If you feel that your daughter is too shy or reserved to join the choir, we understand your concern. However, we firmly believe that every child has the potential to shine. At the International Girls Choir, we create a supportive environment where girls are encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and grow in confidence – whether they are naturally outgoing or a bit more reserved.
Over time, shy girls develop social skills, form lasting friendships, and experience a sense of accomplishment through their musical journey.
“IGC has given my daughter confidence and skills that help her everyday life. The lifelong friendships she has made are truly beautiful.” – IGC Parent
Myth 3: Involvement in a choir could distract from my daughter’s academic performance
Some parents worry that extracurricular activities, such as choir, might detract from academic success. However, research has shown that participation in the arts, particularly music, can actually enhance cognitive abilities and improve concentration. Studies indicate that musical training can support better performance in subjects like mathematics and languages, as well as promote overall academic achievement.
Our program is designed to complement, not compete with, your daughter’s academic commitments. We help her develop valuable time management and organisational skills, which will support both her educational and personal growth.
“It lifts our mood, it releases dopamine and it gives all those networks a workout bringing protective or neuro-protective benefits for our mental health.” – Professor Sarah Wilson (University of Melbourne)
Myth 4: Choir is only about singing
While our name—International Girls Choir—might suggest that singing is our sole focus, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Our comprehensive curriculum goes far beyond vocal training, incorporating the renowned Kodály and Orff methods to build well-rounded musical literacy. Choristers develop essential skills such as rhythm, pitch matching, part singing, and music reading; foundational tools that often enhance their ability to learn instruments as well. But it doesn’t stop there, our program also includes dance and acting instruction, helping girls grow into confident, versatile performers.
“My daughter loves to sing and when we enrol her in the IGC, we thought it’s only singing but it is actually a whole lot more. There’s dancing, musicality, building her confidence, performances and on top of that, my daughter being involved in a community where everyone is recognised on their talent, effort and building their social skills and confidence.” – IGC Parent
Myth 5: Choir participation will take up too much of my daughter’s time
One of the most frequent concerns parents have is that choir practice will be too time-consuming, leaving little room for other activities. At the International Girls Choir, we understand the need for balance. Our regular classes are currently scheduled on the weekend to ensure they don’t interfere with academic or other extracurricular commitments. We hold classes once a week, and those interested in further development may be invited to audition for a specialist group.
“My daughter benefits from getting a well-rounded education in the Performing Arts. She thoroughly enjoys her classes and the engaging curriculum.” – IGC Parent
